Babazeka - A socially aware online store

Projekt is a business which focuses on empowering women from Imizamo Yethu township in Cape Town. “These talented women provide the energy and inspiration at Projekt”, says Peta Becker (the artist and illustrator who runs the business).

The group uses crochet because it needs just one tool - a hook - which can be made anywhere,at any time.

The women involved in Projekt, are able to crochet the products at home, and then meet with Peta once a week at the local community hall. Here the women are encouraged to review each other's work and offer input on the products. Projekt also offers ongoing workshops and lessons, so their women crafters can produce intricate textiles , homewares , bags and scarves, combining colourful crochet with suede, cotton and cotton-linen mixes.

Babazeka loves Projekt's handmade items because of their simple, yet beautiful designs, their originality, and of course, their interesting mixtures of colours.
